bruh
there's so much to unpack, i dont even know where to start or what to say without it making no sense. this will just be a vomit of thoughts:
it's such a beautiful, profound movie that's imo about human perspective, and our unlimited ability to judge and conclude through our immensely limited knowledge. every single character's belief is shattered at some point in the film, about something minor or major, and everyone grows as humans. i fucking grew as the viewer. there were literally multiple scenes where one of the characters is told something to change their perception and it ended up changing mine too. MULTIPLE.
there are so many good lines in this film, so many amazing scenes. the two absolute highlights that imo surpass perhaps everything in Tamil cinema were 1) Mysskin talks to VJS and 2) VJS is begged by his son to just stay with him as a parent.
the first scene made me smile in irony and a realisation about humans' beautiful foolishness, and the second almost made my eyes sweat fr. truly was such a beautiful scene. "you're running away because everyone else is making fun of you, but me and Mum don't care. be a man, or be a woman, just be with us." shit simultaneously made me realise that there ARE people in his life still good to him, that this line was one of the best written things in Tamil film, that this kid delivered the line amazingly, and that VJS is one of the greatest actors of our time.
Vijay Sethupathi absolutely steals the film, and his story is easily the best one. absolute powerhouse of a performance, probably his best one yet. it's so restrained and quiet, but still greatly meaningful.
honestly every actor did great. from FaFa and Samantha, to the group of kids. every single story was compelling because of it.
some choices in the film won't work for some, especially the scenes that blur the line between fantasy and reality, but i can respect the director's boldness to go through with it, and it sets the film apart.
the film also looks gorgeous. the cinematography is among some of the best I've seen, with the lighting and the colours being so well crafted. the editing was also so refreshing; so many cuts js made me smile.
other things that i was happy about. I thought there'd be a bit of a deus ex machina with Samantha's ending and her "dead" ex would get out the car and help her, but thankfully he was really dead and what did save her was something already shown previously. another similar thing was the little preach at the end which i initially thought was a bit unnecessary, but then realised it was the start of the porn film they're watching, which the characters themselves criticise lol. Ramya Krishnan's final dialogue is also pretty fitting, and written really well. another great look into perspective.
could go so much deeper into the Ramya Krishnan stuff, the Mysskin stuff, the Samantha+FaFa stuff, or even the under-appreciated character of VJS' wife, but honestly might just rewatch the film. and im sure other people will have worded it better than me.
there are literally so many good lines. so many good analogies, proverbial dialogues. even that joke about the King and his wife's poisoned tits lol; everything worked so well.
this is one of the best works of Tamil cinema, and one of the best films I've ever seen.
