Really interesting take on the concept of good vs bad and the blurring of the divide between them. Tying the story of Vikram and Vetaal into the story was a super creative move. Madhavan and Sethupathi together carry the film on their backs, mostly Sethupathi imo, who seems natural in the role of Vedha. The way that the plot unfolds and the twists reveal themselves is really well done, and I loved the emphasis on Vikram’s mental struggle to decide what is good and what is bad. The film also plays its twists out effectively by carefully framing seemingly innocuous scenes without raising any alarms, all to come back to those scenes at a later time and highlight the twist.
I do think that characters outside of the main duo should have been fleshed out further. As these external characters come more into play closer to the film’s end, you start to realize you don’t really recognize or understand their personal motives. The lawyer wife character specifically could have been way better, but is narratively sidelined even though her character’s role is integral to the plot.
All in all, Vikram Vedha is a smart, fun thriller with some very interesting commentary on how good and evil can be one and the same.
