Way too long. So many things could have been cut, like Mary Lou’s entire story line, her coming back as an adult had absolutely no consequences and then we never saw her again. Also like 2/3 of the musical acts were horrible or too long. Since the musical numbers didn’t carry the story forward in any way, they should have only kept the best, most extravagant ones like “a girl is a melody”. Everything else could have saved an hour and twenty minutes. So many of the costumes and wardrobe for his wives were stunning, apparently for one of the sets alone, it took a team of 250 tailors and seamstresses which totally checks out. Unsurprising was the treatment of women in this film. As usual for the time, they’re depicted as hysterical, money grubbing, and shrill. I’m surprised it took this long to hit our first biopic. It’s truly a trailblazer when it comes to overlong, ridiculously bland biographies about mediocre men.
