Really really liked this one. It suffered from some old fashioned acting style, but it was interesting how it was a biopic that didn’t focus on this guys entire life (despite the title) but rather one really important aspect of his life. It was something that he just found himself entangled in, and it even moved away from his character for quite some time. It focused on a carnal fear that I think many have, being accused of something you truly didn’t do. Something really disappointing about this movie is that they didn’t focus on the antisemitic aspect of prosecuting and accusing Dreyfus. They do show in his files that he’s Jewish, which really stood out to me, but it didn’t come up in the court like it apparently did in real life. Obviously US politics were pretty muddled in antisemitism itself at this time, but in a modern viewing it’s pretty disappointing that they omitted this. Overall, this movie had great pacing, was super interesting, and taught me about the popularization of the phrase “j’accuse!” which I really enjoy.
Additionally, just the themes of justice and corruption are timeless. The actions of the military, government, and the naïveté of society at the time who worked themselves up into an angry mob not knowing they were being deceived by the powers that be; and then of course the prosecution of the man who decided to speak truth to power will be a story told until the end of time
