rain scene proposal lives rent free in my brain so here I will recite all the lines I remember:
*raining and lizzie startles as darcy shows up panting”
D: “I came to Roseings for the single object of seeing you, I had to see you. These past few months have been a torment. I have struggled in vain and I can bear it no longer. I have fought against my better expectations, the inferiority of your birth, my rank, the circumstances and I am willing to put it all aside and ask you to end my agony. I love… I love… I love you. Most ardently. “
L: “ I’m sorry for any pain I have caused you, believe me it was unconsciously done.” [i don’t think this is the correct beginning of this line]
D: “Is this your reply? Are you laughing at me?”
L: “no”
D: “ are you rejecting me?”
L: “I believe that the feelings which you told me have hindered your regard will help you in overcoming it”
D: “Might I inquire why with so little endeavor at civility I am thus repulsed?”
L: “And I might as well inquire why with so evident a design of insulting me you chose to tell me you liked me against your better judgement. And if I was uncivil that is some excuse, but I have other reasons you know I have.”
D: “what reasons?”
L: “do you think anything might tempt me to accept the man who has ruined, perhaps forever, the happiness of a most beloved sister? do you deny it mr. darcy? that you separated a young couple who loved each other exposing your friend to the center of the world of caprice and my sister to its derisions for dissapointed hope. and involving them both in misery of the acutest kind.”
D: “i do not deny it”
L: “how could you?”
D: “because I believed her indifferent”
L: “indifferent?!”
D: “yes, I watched them most carefully and realized his attachment ran deeper than hers!”
L: “that’s because she’s shy!”
D: “Bingly too is modest but was easily persuaded”
L: “my sister hardly shares her true feelings to me!!”
[i kinda forget the lines here but something like:]
L: “And I suppose you think his fortune had something to do with it?”
D: “no, I wouldn’t do your sister the disservice. though it was suggested…
L: “what was?”
D: “it was made clear that your sister would benefit from an advantageous marriage”
L: “did my sister give that impression?”
D: “no. just your mother, your three younger sisters, and even on occasion your father. You and your sister I must exclude from this.”
[maybe another line but I forget until this:]
L: “And what of Mr. Whickam?”
D: breathes in [?]
L: “He told me of his misfortunes”
D: “Oh yes his misfortunes have been very grave indeed”
L: “[something like you treated him badly and now you mock him]
D: “perhaps these offenses might have been overlooked had your pride…”
L: “my pride?!?”
D: “not been hurt by me admitted scruples about our relationship! pauses?
D: “do you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your circumstances?”
L: “and those are the words of a gentleman! for the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdains for the feelings of others made me realize you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.”
D: “ so this is your opinion of me. thank you for explaining so fully” pauses?
D: gets real close and looks like he’s about to kiss her
D: “Please forgive me, madam, for taking up so much of your time”
D: walks away
