That worm ends up in her brain. The next thing that happens is she gets an idea in there, too. And it's hard to say whether that idea is really hers or it's just the worm. And it makes her do certain things. Predator things. Eventually, you realize that she isn't the same person anymore. She's not the person that she used to be. It's gotta make you wonder, whether you're really married to her... or married to the worm.HOLY SHIT! Jesus, I had no idea what I was expecting because the first time I tried to watch this with my mom, I gave up. That was like a year ago. So, I recently came across this again and decided to give it a try. This time, I watched it alone and holy fuck, what the hell is this? Why is it so good? I have a thing for great, sexually unique movies, and this is no exception. I bet you have never watched a movie like this one and will probably be confused at times. For example, I was, but in the end, I loved it so much. Every actor in this, especially the main two, gave amazing performances. The story in this is so creative. How did Brandon Cronenberg come up with this? Everything was so weird and campy, with so many amazing visuals. This shit was ethereal and so fucking beautiful to watch. It took a lot of risks, but I think they were worth it. It's just so rare to find movies that don't play it safe, and this one definitely didn't.
Its concept is also so terrifying for both people. For example, you are randomly getting possessed by a random person who kills people in your body, and then you just stand there and watch, incapable of doing anything. Getting stuck in someone else's body, will you both fight for control? This concept alone made me watch this, and I think it was so hard to show it, you know? Two people fighting for control in the same mind, that's very hard to do, but shit, they did it well. The opening scene already sets the tone for this, having an agonizing visual of a cable slowly perforating a head. It's not disgusting, but I thought it was uncomfortable. It also shows just how gory this actually was, way gorier than I expected. There is a literal eyeball getting slightly ripped off and so many other brutal stabbings and such. This was very brutal with an amazing ending, and I thought it was kinda sad. In the end, her true personality comes out and ends fatally for someone she cared about, at least I thought she cared about.
There is so much stuff in this movie that I don't even know what to talk about. It was taught, violent, and a sci-fi movie. Now that I see, it felt kinda like a Black Mirror episode. It was built and recorded with such confidence, and the director didn't care what risks he was taking; he just went for it, and I respect him for that. That made this really complex and really requires you to pay attention to actually understand who is who, who is possessed, and what the heck is real or not, what the heck was happening, and many other things. It's bizarre, and now that I notice, IT'S MANDY, DUDE, FROM MANDY (2018). Goddamn, she really has a thing for ethereal, visually insane, horror-gory movies. It's even better than I thought, but just like Mandy, it's not for everyone. It's very complex and has such a unique style that will not please everybody. It's a horrifying but finely observed thriller about cyberintelligence, the future, and forgetting who you are, losing yourself, and sinking in until you lose complete sense of reality and you don't even know who you are anymore. It's full of visceral images. Like I said before, it leaves an uneasy feeling that made me wonder, "What the fuck did I just watch?"
It's full of twists and is a complex web of identity, and trust me, the synopsis on Letterboxd can't cover just how sophisticated, original, and just how freaking batshit insane this movie was. The perfect cast was what really helped make this even greater than it was ever going to be. It was a party for my eyes, with every shot being overly saturated or just insanely blurry shots. Red shots, its color palette looks like a rainbow. It made the movie have a feeling of dysmorphia, I think. It seems like Cronenberg really has a specific style he sticks to in every movie. He also directed "Infinity Pool," so now I understand why they all looked so similar. They both have a bizarre, chilling, and unique story, hardcore blood and gore, and a feeling of pure insanity. They are disturbing at times with hopeless endings, but they still seem like the happy ones.
Overall, I fucking loved this. I had to let it sink in; it's very complex. And I'm gonna be honest, towards the end, I was getting lost. It's very gory, hopeless, and, most of all, a fucking insane movie. It's sci-fi and horror combined into one of the most euphoric ways I have ever seen. It's beautiful in a fucked-up way, full of blood and fear of losing yourself.
