An underrated piece of english cinema history, The Clairvoyant (or Evil Mind) is a film directed by Maurice Elvey starring an early Claude Raines. The movie speaks on the desire and the burden of knowing.
One of my favorite parts of this movie was the romance. The relationship between maximus and renee is beautiful. Renee is such an amazing wife, she is caring for Max and she supports him with everything he does. Since the start of the movie she is always by his side and the viewer can feel the love that she has for him. This is why it is so heartbreaking when she worries about Christine, making the romance part of the movie really interesting to watch.
Along with the romance, the mystery and the drama between the “gift” and maximus. It all appears to be a gift but it is more like a curse, a gift from either God or the devil. While at first the act of being able to foresee events helps Maximus go from a steet act to a nationally known celebrity, it goes downhill when it attacks his personal life along with his own future. At times the film even comments on society’s cravings for true prophesies. This film also has themes of fatalism and destiny, awesome things to see in the 1930’s.
This film is extremely well made, the mine cave-in features impressive set design and good cinematography, it made me question how it was made.
This movie deserves a high rating, I really enjoyed it.
