this film just reminded me how good the original was.. because literally what was this.
i watched the original cube film ages ago, and can say that it’s stuck with me over months, to the point where i can recall majority of the characters + plot.. and somehow while writing this review directly after finishing cube 2, i still remember the og cube more because this is just super forgettable. the 1997 film was great for multiple reasons : it has amazing atmospheric tension and has some nice commentary of human nature, and the innate evil within humans, as well as see characters like quentin completely go off the rails even going as far as murder, showing how humans will commit vile acts without any consequences. but this films just gave me nothing! it has some really weird confusing plot of government conspiracies, which yes the government is corrupt but it’s just less interesting than the mystery of a higher force controlling them within a cube, and this one just misses the mark. the death in the original is well crafted, using practical effects and some cgi to make some really nice surrealist effects.. but this one just uses the worst, trashiest cgi that was comical to say the least! the characters are also just worse, and they’re all annoying and not fleshed out at all.. and for the most part they’re not memorable, and there’s too many characters which minimises the effect of the og. a concept of a ‘hypercube’ while it’s an interesting concept, it just isn’t utilised very well here.. like at all. we barely get to learn anything about it. this is a complete dumpster fire which can be ironically enjoyed due to its awful cgi and unrealistic character interactions, i think this one’s a no from me..
