Wow there’s a lot to dig into here. I’ll start by saying I loved the movie as a whole, the story worked for me despite some problems which I’ll get to in a second, the emotion was handled very nicely, and Cary Grant and Irene Dunne’s chemistry makes the whole thing as they’re both phenomenal. I’ll start with the story because I have so much on my mind about it, this is one of the most beautiful and genuine portrayals of adoption parenthood that I’ve ever seen, even though I can’t really name another one of those I can still assure this movie’s gorgeousness in that regard. I loved the smaller moments that really made you feel Roger and Julie’s love, like the scene where Roger thinks their baby was kidnapped or the scene where they’re surprising Julie for her birthday, it’s impossible not to smile and adds a much welcomed lightheartedness to this incredibly emotional story. I just have one real issue with this movie, it’s one issue that breaks down into a bunch of other issues but it’s one main thing, I would’ve ended this movie right after Roger convinced the judge to allow them to keep Trina. I don’t like where they took the story after that, I’m not a fan of the whole “a couple needs a kid to be happy” thing in general and especially as a movie trope, and extra especially when the actors had this much chemistry, and extra extra especially when that trope is used to try to tearjerk the ending to a film that I had loved the emotion of prior to that. I don’t know, I get why they killed off the daughter but I at least wish they preserved Roger and Julie’s relationship with that and didn’t only revive it with the arrival of another kid. Like I said earlier it’s one issue that breaks down into multiple, the problem could’ve been solved by giving us the happy ending of Roger coming home and surprising Julie with still having Trina, that would’ve been a great end to the film to me. Well alright, now that I’ve addressed the story and written way too much about it it’s time to get to the rest of this, and it was made very well! Cinematography looked nice and I enjoyed the fun editing, the script was as good as I hoped and delivered about as well as I could ask for in terms of emotion. The only real issue is it just dragged on for too long, and when that extra time hurts the story like it did here it can really do a number on a film unfortunately. I never like coming out of a movie feeling this conflicted with so much love for parts of a film and disappointment in others but it sadly has to happen sometimes, I know it’ll be the good parts that stick with me though and for that I’m thankful.
