i don’t know why i decided to watch both of the cube sequels back to back.. but like atleast this was better then the second one?
that opening scan was absolutely incredible, extremely goopy practical effects as his skin just falls off, just that scene alone makes me like it more than hypercube. the gruesome practical effects in this film are generally amazing, and some really memorable kills in here. it answers a couple questions surrounding the mystery of the original cube, as this serves more as a prequel and shifting between the people within the cube and people outside the cube : while i like how it helps me understand the original it also just undermines the mystery of the first film, i sort of like when it gets left up to imagination so it was kinda good but also not. it removed the trashy cgi elements and uses more mechanical, visceral practical effects also used well in the 1997 film, in fact i think it looks better here. despite this being an improvement, there were some parts just leaving me wanting more. the technician sequences felt like a bore, it ruins the unsettling atmosphere and this film felt a little cheesy. also, this film tries to answer questions and yet somehow just leaves me more confused that when i started, adding loads of things which i don’t perceive as necessary.
