So This is Love? was another early Frank Capra production for fledgling Columbia Pictures. The hero, dress designer Jerry McGuire (William Collier Jr.), is tired of being considered a wimp. After business hours, Jerry secretly takes boxing lessons, enabling him to knock the stuffings out of his burly rival Spike Mullins (Johnnie Walker). Jerry's newfound pugilistic skills wins him the affections of store clerk Hilda Jensen (Shirley Mason), who's just car-razy about "cave men." Filmed in a fast three weeks, So This is Love? was completed before Frank Capra's Matinee Idol but released afterward. Leading lady Shirley Mason was the sister of Viola Dana, who starred in Capra's initial Columbia effort, That Certain Thing.

I was curious to see more William Collier Jr. after seeing him in what's left of Just Another Blonde. This was just okay, the plot was very predictable and wasn't too satisfying.

Not as long as Alfred Hitchcock's The Ring, So This Is Love is about on par with that film because some gags go on for too long. This film's love triangle works better because it's goofier rather than melodramatic. Intertitles keep mentioning the word "it," from Clara Bow's It (1927), which was a slang term meaning sex appeal.

My wife isn’t a fan of silent films, so I’m working on this section of the Frank Capra collection by myself.

I was utterly surprised at how much I enjoyed a silent film from 1928 with an admittedly formulaic love triangle plot. William Collier Jr. was excellent as the underdog and easy to root for. The romance was sweet and the whole film was charming. Capra had the goods right at the very beginning of his career.

Sensitive boy loves pretty girl, egotistical asshole "loves" same pretty girl, climaxes with boxing match; tale as old as time. Simple and cute, only an hour long, could easily be a Harold Lloyd picture. Definitely feels like early Capra with not only his eye as a director, but the running theme of the little guy fighting against the bully as well. Glad I got this Capra at Columbia boxset for Christmas, look forward to diving into the rest.
