Very thoughtful. I love how so much of the conflict is mediated through its idea of community. Reminds me a bit of Seduced and Abandoned in how it’s constantly balancing the oppressive qualities of a small town with the comedy of it all. That final scene is one of the best, so carefully staging the inevitable with Raimu who has such a feel for his character.

Simple and steady script following a baker in a provincial village whose wife leaves him one night leaving him too despondent to make bread for the community. At first they laugh at his misfortune or take it as a valuable lesson but soon they band together to track her down so they may once again receive the bread they need. Much of the film is rather static though the scenes we get to venture into the town and countryside are much appreciated. It’s a great script though carried by a fantastic lead performance by Raimu. Drags a bit in the middle but I love the community feeling of it and there’s something darkly warm about it (not remotely surprised it was turned into a musical decades later).
