I think that Dragged Across Concrete is an incredibly misunderstood film. Now, I can completely understand all of the criticism for its length and for the casting/acting, I would even agree with most of those criticisms. However, where I would disagree would be in the effectiveness of the film itself.I've seen so many people say things like "why is it so violent' and "why is Jennifer Carpenter in it just to die?", just to not realize that it's those specific aspects the film was trying so hard to criticize. For instance, the three main bad guy killers, who end up killing most people throughout this movie, get the least graphic and the tamest deaths out of all the characters. Like the main two cops die horribly whilst struggling to breath, Jennifer Carpenter dies (the most graphic way) literally RIGHT after she gets introduced (it's an obvious criticism on not only violence but the whole "kidnapped girl" trope in heist/crime movies). And then Biscuit gets shot like 10 times in the crotch only to get domed in the back of the head and them have the trio cut open his organs. I mean they barely even SHOWED the "bad guys" let alone their deaths.I don't think this is a perfect movie, I mean I do wish it were made with different actors (just the main cops duh) and had half an hour shaved off. But aside from that I think overall, this was/is an incredibly effective movie (for what it was going for) with some very interesting characters, a very unique style, and some decently visually pleasing cinematography.Final thoughts: I'm on the cusp of 4 star and 4.5, and the only characters that weren't complete pieces of shit in this movie were the bank employees... (also, great tension building, specifically towards the last half)
Didn't even realize this would be my 400th movie watched, but it's still a great movie, so a guess it works out!
