I’d been wanting to watch this for a while, and yeah, it was definitely worth it.
I always like movies based on real events because you get to learn something new, and this one does a really good job putting you into that world. On a technical level, it’s strong. The cinematography is really solid, the soundtrack fits well, and overall it just feels well put together.
The performances are where it really stands out. Matthew McConaughey is incredible here, and that’s saying a lot considering he’s not even the main character. The accent, the mannerisms, the range he shows… it’s just a great performance.
Richie Merritt also surprised me a lot. For a first role, he does a really solid job. He feels natural, handles the accent well, and carries his character in a convincing way.
The supporting cast is strong too, with Jonathan Majors, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Brian Tyree Henry all adding to the film.
The story itself is intense. Seeing that side of Detroit during that time, how rough everything feels, the environment, the people… it’s raw and pretty hard at times. You really get a sense of how things worked and how messed up the situation was.
If I had an issue, it’s with the structure. It sometimes feels like there are gaps, like parts of the story aren’t fully explored or connected, and it could’ve used a bit more cohesion. I also wouldn’t have minded seeing even more of Detroit and its context.
But honestly, the technical level and the performances carry it enough.
Overall, it’s a really good film if you’re interested in real stories and want a look into that era and the life of White Boy Rick.
