Gypo Nolan is a former Irish Republican Army man who drowns his sorrows in the bottle. He's desperate to escape his bleak Dublin life and start over in America with his girlfriend. So when British authorities advertise a reward for information about his best friend, current IRA member Frankie, Gypo cooperates. Now Gypo can buy two tickets on a boat bound for the States, but can he escape the overwhelming guilt he feels for betraying his buddy?

Such a pervading sadness throughout this film, mixed in with some really stunning visuals and themes of guilt, I'd be curious to see more John Ford films of this variety.

some of these shots had me chuckling, shaking my head and muttering “john ford you crazy son of a bitch you did it” so yeah i liked it

Decent story that loses its steam along the way. Ford however puts in his A game as the movie looks great and he creates an extremely moody atmosphere which I love

The direction from John Ford felt very cluttered to me. A lot of hammy acting and over-the-top performances, as well as kind of foggy cinematography, but it did fly by quickly.
