Monsters (2010) - What is the world like, if it’s already hell?
Monsters is a movie released in 2010, directed, writer, cinematography, production designer, and VFX artist by Gareth Edwards. The movie follows 2 people, Andrew Kaulder (Portrayed by Scoot McNairy) and Samantha Wyden (portrayed by Whitney Able). These 2 has to make it to the U.S. but through an «infected zone», which makes it heavily dangerous to travel though.
Monsters is a movie that is rather impressivepost production, and the whole production itself is highly impressive. The movie sat at a microbudget of only around $500,000 (USD), and all the special effects was done by Gareth Edwards, in his bedroom actually. With the help of photoshop and another editing app. And somehow, he was the only one doing the cinematography, yet it was some of the most beautiful wide angle frames I’ve ever seen, in my whole life. And digital effects, not the very «best», but easily the most impressive I’ve ever seen, because of the sheer amount of dedication to it.
Now, what I also really liked, is the acting. Not from the 2 main characters, because, quite honestly, they did a pretty standard job, but what really got me intrigued, was the locals. They got random locals from Mexico, and said to improvise lines as they go on. Which turned out to sound really natural, and realistic.
There are some rather unfortunate weak points to the movie too. And that is the writing and dialogue. When a movie starts to explain, in words what is happening (like «So if we don’t get to the border within 48 hours, we’re trapped here?» et cetera) just makes the movie cliche and poorly written, but here, they improvised nearly everything, so I can’t hate it too much!
Overall? It’s a movie worth checking out, because of the sheer effort Gareth Edwards has put into the movie. (Specially if you want to see how to create good visuals, on a tiny budget.)
