A deeply intimate and emotionally pleasing look into the complexities that arise when forming a romantic relationship and how anxieties and expectations can shape that experience. All of which is perfectly mirrored by the harsh realities of what can happen further down the line when a relationship isn’t treated with the utmost care, which also portrays the fact that not everything can work out perfectly.

The whole film is created with such cosiness and well-done sentimentalism which feels earned, something which is often difficult to tackle in a film. It’s shot with such simplicity and intimacy, further adding to the relatable and personal experience that I had with this film. I can definitely see this becoming a comfort film.

But at the centre of it all is an astonishing performance again from Philip Seymour Hoffman. The greatest actor of all time, and I really can’t tell if this is one of his best ever performances or if even his most average performances still beat most actors. No actor quite understands how to portray men who are deeply layered and emotional the way Philip Seymour Hoffman does. Truly an outstanding actor. His screen presence is so huge no matter the film. I often sit there and shed a tear thinking of what he could have done with the rest of his career, but I think it’s equally, if not more important, to look back on what he gave to cinema.

Overall, an absolutely tremendous hidden gem. I can understand why it may not appeal to some, but it certainly appealed to me.

I’m just kinda confused why PSH chose this to be his only directorial credit. Also, there so banger songs used throughout in very odd ways.

With Philip Seymour Hoffman being my favorite actor, I thought it would only be right to watch his directorial debut. 
It’s very odd seeing Hoffman play such a timid role, with his only signature crash out coming right at the end. 
Jack’s hair choice was also, quite odd. I couldn’t tell if he was semi growing dreadlocks or if he braided his hair until about 15 minutes in the movie. 
Other than that, kind of a meh movie. I’m very sad we’ll never be able to see another movie with him behind the camera, though.
