A film that feels less watched than lived. Vagabond is amazingly personal, psychological, and almost spiritual in the way it follows a soul slowly disappearing from the world while still desperately trying to stay free inside it.

As the mystery of the who and why and how of her passing is unravelled we meet those who interacted with Mona in her last moments, capturing a range of societal views of those who experience the vagrant lifestyle.

The opening scenes, with the discovery of young Mona’s body is evocative of Lynch’s later Twin Peaks pilot and the brittle cold mystery that would unravel from that discovery. Bonnaire is engaging as Mona a picture of strength and individuality upon a doomed trajectory, yet it is not so much a spiral, as just life on the road, where the next meal and next bed is a constant hustle, and every interaction is a transactional opportunity, often times the transaction of a fleeting boost to one’s own good will through provision of assistance.
