You know what’s the only thing better than Olivia de Havilland? TWO Olivia de Havillands!!
No but seriously, this was awesome. I chose this rather obscure noir which I thought would be around a 6/10 to help myself sleep and found myself glued to the screen. Partly because de Havilland plays both a devilish murderer and naive victim, often at the same time. Siodmak slowly builds up tension throughout, choosing his more intense compositions carefully. But when they hit, damn do they hit. It is convoluted, has a rather predictable ending, and is pretty poorly written, but still so damn entertaining! This is one of the underrated gems of the 40s.
