I can’t really put a rating on this because the story of Les Misérables for me personally was literally one of the things that shaped my personality. Being torn between utilitarianism or deontology, understanding both Jean Valjean and Javert’s perspectives as a child really broadened my way of thinking. It taught me not to empathize blindly without looking through the others eyes and think why they do what they do, and to think how there is no perfect way of governance and that the mere ability of the people to change power peacefully is one of the most crucial things in society. Along with other things these make this novel a timeless story for all humankind to come. While this was overwhelming for young me I’m deeply grateful I got to experience this novel along with many other old classics like this as a child. It truly shaped a great part of me. I will say the casting was perfect. Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush were perfectly faithful to the characters in the novel.
When the social contract fails its people, are they still bound by it? -Rousseau
