at first i thought the start of this film was kind of dragged but i came to realize it was just an expertly crafted setup for the rest of the film. it honestly gave a bit of a masaki kobayashi vibe but with that classic old school chinese cinematic flair with a sort of a mystical atmospheric touch, i honestly really enjoyed this. if anything it was a bit longer than it should be imo, but overall it was great.

fantastic movie. it probably deserves a 5/5, but im gonna keep it at a 4.5/5 for now. halfway through, my sister had to leave the house, and i had to switch rooms and watch the dog. also its 3 hours long and in a language i dont speak, so it was a little hard to focus, but i feel like i managed to follow it pretty good. its undeniably an amazing piece of filmaking. its got some of the best cinematography ive ever seen, and i liked the ending a lot. im sure that ill be ready to call it a masterpiece on my next watch

Good but too old. I get that if you had started with older movies then saw this it would be a revelation. But starting with things like crouching tiger, hero and flying daggers then going back to this makes it slow and a little corny. It should not take an hour for things to start to happen

I would not recommend this to anyone who is not interested in the genre and wants to see how it evolved
