Slow-going, a little on the nose, across successive campaigns, The Blue Kite explores how political regimes dismantle "fatherhood."

Tension: Will this boy ever be happy? Who will die next? Who will survive? Will the political war end?

Theme: The Chinese goverment has some real problems.

Writing: I feel like some things I needed more culture and context to understand. But there was some good drama back and forth seeing this from an outskirts perspective. I thought it was interesting being split up by “father, uncle, step-father”. I have never seen that before. I didn’t get the meaning completely behind the blue kite. I think it really emphasized passing on the love you’ve been given to the next person who needs it despite your circumstances. Also some side plots never really closed off like the blind guy and his girlfriend and their involvement in politics. Lots of spectral evidence stuff similar to communism in the U.S. I can see why this was banned in China.

Acting: I thought the kid did a really good job with his role. And the parental figures. Kind of in a tragic-coming of age way.

Production Design: Very simple and kept in a neighborhood or two somehow. Fun things I’ve never seen like the exploding old man toy and the lanterns kids used. Really just me learning about China in general haha.
