Well, that was… something. I understood absolutely NOTHING.
I think they were being chased by a dog, maybe? And perhaps a family member died (I’m saying this because during the scene where the three of them are sitting on the couch, a fourth figure appears in the shadows). That could explain why the dialogue makes no sense, as well as how their lives have been affected by the loss of that person.
The static camera, the fact that they’re always wearing the same clothes, the same setting over and over again — all of that suggests an extremely repetitive and meaningless life. Without the “fourth rabbit” in their lives, everything has become repetitive and devoid of meaning. That’s my theory, at least.
The applause and laughter were really getting on my nerves. But I understand why they’re there: it’s basically a criticism of the sitcom industry, where there’s often nothing to laugh at or applaud, yet the audience does it anyway. And a lot of the time, people don’t even understand it (precisely because there’s nothing there to understand in the first place).
The atmosphere is EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE, so I’d actually recommend watching this at night, because it just feels different that way. (You NEED TO WATCH THIS AT NIGHT!!)
This was my first David Lynch film, and the comments say that it has some kind of connection to his other films, especially Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. I don’t know if I would have understood more of this film if I had seen those before. What’s probably going to happen is that I’ll watch those films and then come back to this one to see if I can find any connections.
