Watching her fake cry, scheme and poison a man was a thrill, truly. Joan is just so effortlessly dramatic and gorgeous to watch, there's something so mysterious about her that I can't put my finger on, but maybe that was the illusion that she was trying to give off for all of her roles. Because apart from The Women, she's so hard to read and very coy. I think that's what made her stand out as an individual in the industry during a time when there was a specific way actresses had to be and I feel she dared that narrative for taking on these dramatic roles so well.

First hour of this is a bit lethargic but the set up definitely pays off in the final third. Plenty of pretty photography to accompany us on the wait which saves it from becoming too monotonous, and it sticks the landing, in my opinion, despite some fairly minor gripes.
Joan Fontaine plays such an evil woman in this movie and honestly that’s exactly what I need in a movie to enjoy it.

Honestly that freaky little theme was 40 years ahead of its time. Very excellent score. Detective had a monk moment. LOVE a plotting Joan Fontaine! That end rules. What a weird and evil little movie.
