(Watched this for a class)
What a heartbreaking film. It truly is a depressing movie that focuses on the, well, "aftershock" of a devastating earthquake that hits China. However, it's a pretty decent one as well. While I'm not the biggest fan of disaster movies, this one was alright. I had to watch it for a class, so I didn't go out of my way to find this movie.
The movie doesn't necessarily focus on the earthquake itself. Yes, it happens and there's a sequence that probably lasts like five minutes on the actual earthquake itself. But most of it focuses on life after the devastating earthquake and how it impacted a family. Essentially, an earthquake hits a city in China and a family gets caught in the disaster. Some relatives die, and the rest of the movie spends time discussing the life of each member after this tragedy struck their town.
The acting is pretty good. Nothing amazing, but nothing bad. There are some very emotional, heartbreaking scenes and the actors play their roles well. It's definitely more of a drama than it is an action movie when compared to its other disaster movie counterparts.
The only gripe I really had with this movie is how slow it was at parts. It was kind of unique to see how each member of the family lived a drastically different life after the earthquake, but there were some slow parts.
Again, disaster movies aren't necessarily my cup of tea, but this one wasn't bad at all. I'd definitely recommend it for any fans of the genre or anyone who is wanting to get into more foreign cinema.
