Wolski’s crisp, distant cinematography saves this from being a (for the most part) miserable slog, at least the first hour and a half cause i ended up quite liking the final 30 or so minutes. Scott and I clearly are of the same mind in how disinterested we both are in the actual ransom plot the movie is structured around, vastly preferring the parts centered around the inherent dehumanization brought on by decadence and capital interests, unfortunately those beats are rather sparse, pretty much entirely relegated to when and only when Christopher Plummer is on screen; speaking of Plummer, I’m really not one to hate characters, which has always been an issue watching so called ‘eat the rich’ movies where they clearly want you to hate the wealthy and snobbish characters, so kudos to Christopher Plummer and Scarpa’s screenplay for crafting a wealthy character I was actually able to hate, he really made my blood boil during the scene discussing the ‘tax deductible ransom,’ and when we demanded custody of the kids I wanted to jump into the screen and throw a glass at him or something..
