The complexity of love is very well portrayed, both Vita and Virginia were complex people with a variety of conflicts as well as chances to remark themselves thorough writing; the letters were something else, not only without them we wouldn’t have a story to tell but it’ll lack depth, each one of them feels like they were ripping their own flesh and peeling their souls, I was left with my heart dropping emptiness in the end, and understanding that both of them needed other people in life it’s realistic to what love is to people who feel too much, love is more than happiness, it’s suffering, it’s shit, it’s loneliness, it’s nothiness and everything all at once.

The complexity of love is very well portrayed, both Vita and Virginia were complex people with a variety of conflicts as well as chances to remark themselves thorough writing; the letters were something else, not only without them we wouldn’t have a story to tell but it’ll lack depth, each one of them feels like they were ripping their own flesh and peeling their souls, I was left with my heart dropping emptiness in the end, and understanding that both of them needed other people in life it’s realistic to what love is to people who feel too much, love is more than happiness, it’s suffering, it’s shit, it’s loneliness, it’s nothiness and everything all at once.

I was so excited for this after reading Vita & Virginia's letters earlier this year and had such high hopes, but honestly just came out of the cinema feeling disappointed. The weakest part of this for me was easily the dialogue, which just felt contrived and almost too on the nose. Button relies on excerpts from real letters to signify chemistry between the two leads, but even these readings felt cold and unnatural in the context of this script. I also wasn't a fan of the pulsating anachronistic score or sporadic fantasy-like elements that she employs as visual representations of Virginia's mental illness - both of which were quite jarring and made for a strange, inconsistent tone. Ultimately, Vita and Virginia reduces these two extraordinary women into an image that is far too neat and conventional to feel anywhere near genuine.
