I’m biased with this movie I can’t deny that. A film I watched a lot as a kid and one that I love a lot. I think this movie is such a vibe movie, because there’s just something cozy about 1930s snowy France and a movie talking about its the medium’s history with such reverence while also being a beautiful tribute to George Melies.
I honestly think this is the first movie that made me think about the medium. It didn’t make me fall in love with it, that would happen later. But I can say that this planted the seed for my love of movies and it is a beautiful showcase on the magic of cinema.
One aspect that makes me love the film is that it feels like a modern fairy tale. There’s that unique mix of steampunk and whimsical high reality that makes such for an interesting atmosphere. The various aspects of the story feel both grounded but also fantasy like. The robot that can draw, an orphan living in a train station fixing the clocks. It all adds to this beautiful world that you can actually feel.
