A subtle portrayal of trauma the evolves into a tense experience that almost spoon feeds its themes to you near the end. There’s so many layers to this film to dissect, but I want to focus on its main message of trauma. Frankenstein is a motif for censorship and how it leads to the imagination creating false realities to fill in the gaps. This imagination however ends up creating fear in a young child who then encounters a “phantom” of the creature that traumatizes her to the point she can’t speak. There’s also of course political undertones like the soldier, as well as the bleak nature of the village that attempt to drive this message of trauma home. It bring up critiques on humanity, and the dangers of desensitization in childhood that eventually leads to violence. 

As for the childhood aspect of this film, the actor that plays Ana did a stunning job at portraying the emotions of childhood trauma and the experience that come with it. The look in her eyes had the ability to portray fear as well as guilt at the same time, and also somehow showed anger, sadness, and a questioning nature when confronted by the fact her sister wasn’t dead. 

Stunning film that feels ok for the first hour, but really comes together the last 30 minutes to make it truly unforgettable. It also is a slow burn that comes with extremely tense moments where you question when something bad is going to happen, as it feels almost inevitable over the course of the film.
