Ip man 4 is very interesting, as it is far campier than any of the other movies, but it still follows the formula of 1 and 2.
3 was the weakest of these movies, because it focused way too much on the humanity and personal life of Ip Man (the character, not the real guy, as these movies are obviously bullshit.)
This movie has a little bit of that (which I’ll get to) but largely it goes back to ip man proving that china is the greatest country of all time. In 1 ip man conquered japan, then in 2 he conquered the British, and now for his final film, he conquers America.
3 fails largely because Ip man could unfortunately not punch his wife’s cancer. Another big flaw of 3, which gets rectified here, is in 3 Ip man doesn’t kick anyone’s ass. He does one round and ties with Mike Tyson, and at the end he slightly and honorably beats master Z.
But in this movie he really beats the hell out of and humiliates the people he fights, and you cannot help but cheer. Great stuff!
Okay now for the more mixed stuff. The other core conflicts in the movie other than punches
1. Racism. This is handled in a very campy way, and very direct, but there is something effective about directly calling out white supremacy, and then having ip man humiliate the racists. It mostly works, and it is cool to see a movie not ignore America’s racism.
2. Ip man’s death and relationship with his son. This stuff feels like the wife’s cancer in 3, in the sense that the franchise is not prepared to handle it, and it falls a little flat. Thankfully, unlike 3, this stuff gets very little focus.
Overall a fun ride. Wish there was maybe one more fight, but what’s here is great, and the movie surrounding the action is pretty compelling overall.
