You're scared because the world is dying and you don't know how to stop it. But I do. A new world is coming. This is only the beginning.

SHERIFF 😭

This is the kind of superhero movies I want. ONLY origin stories. No more big bad fights. Just origin tales.

The CGI definitely gave off Apple loading screen that I could stare at for hours, but in a good way.

Somehow made me emotional? All the backstories, the blueberry taffy, the drowning incident related to a sudden drought? I eat that symbolism up.

“Mildly entertaining. Mildly.” - my father

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

We have been fed a plethora of superhero movies in recent years, which usually has a big studio backing them up and which normally ends in a big CGI spectacle, which induces more groans than amazement to be honest.

However, hidden within these big-scale superhero flicks, are some films which are more grounded and have low stakes, Fast Color (2018) is one of them, and honestly it feels refreshing to see such endeavours on our screen.

The movie is set in dystopian future, where water is scarce and used as a currency. The lead character is Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who is being chased by the government. Ruth has the power to move tectonic plates, but it only happens when she has seizures.

Even with such a small scale, the visual effects are surprisingly done extremely well. The formation and the breaking down of the cup look extremely beautiful. There are some shots that I can't talk about because I would be delving into spoiler territory, but those were my personal favourites.

Talking about the shots, even the cinematographer has done an exceptional job of capturing the moments in the film. Shots are particularly zoomed-in, capturing each expression in detail. Also, the zoomed-out long takes employed are perfect for capturing the picturesque sky.

However, even though I enjoyed the film from a technical standpoint. I felt that there was a genuine lack of tension in the air, which made this film a chore to follow. I couldn't invest myself into the film. A movie with commentaries on climate change and generational trauma deserved a much more intriguing script.
