Interesting to start off the obscenity trial but could have done without since the narration tells the audience how they should feel about Emma. It doesn’t leave room for the audience to make their own judgements. The costumes are divine though!

Ashamedly I haven’t read the book, so I can’t speak on whether it did that justice, but this was a perfectly enjoyable melodrama. Wasn’t a fan of the framing device or lead actress, but the arresting narrative and Vincente Minnelli’s stylish direction made up for it. The ball scene was a big highlight and basically all about his strengths.

This is my first non-musical Minnelli and, as I expected, he’s very good at making movies no matter the genre.
