When the Spirit World is flooded due to an unusual rainfall which overflows the River Sanzu (aka the River Styx), Lord Koenma senses an extremely powerful enemy. He entrusts Death God Botan, to deliver to Spirit Detective Yusuke, a mysterious item which must be protected from the invading enemy. However, by the time Botan finds Yusuke, she's too weak to explain the situation. Yusuke and his friends are left in the dark about the new enemy, but not for long. Soon it is a battle for Earth between mere Spirit Detectives and the almighty king of the Netherworld.

Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie - Poltergeist Report
It’s a crying shame that this is the only feature-length Yu Yu Hakusho movie we got. There’s so much lore in the entire series that isn’t explored here, but then again, it’s a Shōnen movie. They have paper thin plots with villains that never come up in the series again and they end up never being canon to the series as a whole. That said, go into this with a grain of salt (and watch it in its original Japanese with subtitles, the dub is total dogshit). The real attraction here is the fight scenes, which are well-animated and they run SOOOOOOO smooth.

My favourite anime ever. This movie has ZERO correlation to the anime, it’s like a standalone film. Pretty boring.. plus the dub voice actors aren’t the same as the anime’s which sucks :(

I like Yu Yu Hakusho, but I don’t like Yu Yu Hakusho: Poltergeist Report. Save for Kuwabara, the core cast are robbed of their personalities and quirks and are more or less used just for uninspired dialogue and great action scenes that are animated surprisingly well. It retains the format of the show where the gang goes up against foes that aren’t always stronger than them, but rather have an ability they have to work around to beat. It’s such a shame that far too much of the film is just repeating exposition from earlier in the film that wasn’t very interesting to begin with.
