Director- Kitano Takeshi. This is the sixth film I have seen of Kitano Takeshi. The film follows the protagonist as he deals with a failing body and mind. The film was also written and edited by Kitano Takeshi. He edited it with Ota Yoshinori who has also worked on Zatoichi 2003, Kikujiro, Getting Any?, etc.The film was shot by Yanagijima Katsumi who has also worked on Battle Royale, Sonatine, Kikujiro, etc.The art direction was done by Isoda Norihiro who has also worked on Hanabi, Swing Girls, Kids Return, etc.The sound was done by Horiuchi Senj who has also worked on Hanabi, Kids Return, Dolls, etc.The sound was also done by Shibasaki Kenji who has also worked on August in the Water, Tokyo Fist, Audition, etc. This one's the worst so far from his filmography. It might be due to my expectations being high due to his previous works which were more rounded and featured fewer one-sided beatdowns/torture fests though enjoyable, were unexpected from a comedic guy such as Beat Takeshi. The film also had quite a simple narrative which makes it more accessible but takes away typical Kitano nuances. The action is also quite fast-paced in this. The film also lacked heart i.e. it lacked emotions and felt too mechanical. The whole film feels like I was watching dominoes falling which was intended but not the best choice. It may very well have been a setup for its sequel, Beyond Outrage. Only time will tell if I guessed accurately. The film still has some great scenes such as the bomb blast aftermath which was fantastic. The film also sheds some light on passerby casualties in times of conflict and the drug peddling business. The film also had several great violent scenes like the one at the dentist. This added a nice touch to it and showcased their ruthlessness quite well. The film had a feel like Gangs of Wasseypur made by Anurag Kashyap as it too had a lot of important characters dying though its characters were more fleshed out due to having a runtime of 320 minutes split into two parts. The ending held quite the twist with Beat Takeshi getting stabbed but due to looking at him in the poster of the second part, it had no effect due to lack of suspense.
