My best summer? Really?
Ava was the film top of my list to see at the London Film Festival 2017 but, due to work commitments, I was unable to catch a screening of it.
The film was written by debutant Léa Mysius as part of her university course, and who later decided to direct it herself. It revolves around a thirteen year old who learns she is quickly losing her sight and elects to do everything she can before this inevitably occurs, and to have the best summer she can: sex, rebellion, mischief, theft all play big parts.
In my opinion, the film proves itself to be in good hands within the first five minutes - the opening sequence is delight. However, as the film progresses it seems to slightly lose focus with our main character making decisions that seem somewhat odd. That being said, Léa Mysius has constructed an interesting film that pushes boundaries of the girl/woman construct, especially in regards to the physical presence of the body. Although it didn't hit all the right notes, I'll be keen to watch what Mysius does in the future.
