I loved the sharp, dreamlike, gen-x softclub visuals of Visible Secret. The whole film felt incredibly nostalgic, from the styling of the frames to the horror/comedy mix of the plot. The constant use of wide angles reminded me of some of the best examples of early-2000s spooky films (unintentionally fitting watch for Friday the 13th).

Ann Hui creates a story that fuses traditional Chinese notions about ghosts, the political and economic uncertainties of the late 90s and early 2000s, and almost rom-com-like tropes. While it’s definitely flawed, there’s nonetheless something captivating about Visible Secret. Yes, I might once again be under the spell of nostalgia, but the time literally flew by. And being that engaging is definitely a sign of quality in my book.
