"This moment was brought by ignoring our reality. That's why we must move on with our mortal life with this blink of an eye."
Have you ever thought about not wanting to be an adult and just wanna follow your passions? Yeah, that's what Solanin is all about.
Solanin uses rotten Solanine potatoes to serve as a metaphor for them rotting from their painful jobs, when all they want is to follow their passion and make music as a three-member band.
It follows our two main characters, Meiko and her boyfriend Taneda. Meiko works as an office lady while Taneda works as a freelance illustrator alongside a vocalist/guitarist by the band that is less active after college graduation and consists of Billy: drummer, and Kato: bassist.
They both decided to quit their jobs and Taneda decides to pursue his other career to resume his band. Yet, it fills more anxiety for Taneda, wondering if he really did made the right choice.
Such a meaningful story about passion originally written by Inio Asano and directed by Takahiro Miki. With songs by Ajikan that fits well for this film.
The comedy, the moments and the dynamic, they're pretty memorable. Its like I'm with them too. And the last shot is so beautifully and emotionally crafted.
Overall, Solanin is such a compelling film about rejecting adulthood and following passion. An emotional film good enough that deserves more recognition.
