This movie genuinely upset me. I went into it with such strong hopes and excitement to watch, but I was met with a sadists sad attempt to be avant-garde and artistic. This film fed into the entire concept of BDSM being too patriarchal. There’s a line between submission, and patriarchy! It felt exploitative to watch this young girl be persuaded into joining this odd cult-like society for some BOYFRIEND (not even a ring on it). The movie claims to have themes of “sexual liberation,” but I truly only think the men in this movie had the chance to explore that. From my point of view, it seems that all of the females have been groomed into submission, and that is way different than finding liberation sexually of your own terms.
(Also: No, I do not believe in kink shaming, or the concept that BDSM or female submission is rooted in misogyny, I just think this movie was trying too hard to play into this Medieval traditional heteronormative way of sex)
