genuinely really sweet movie ! i hesitated on whether or not i should give it the queer tag bc it technically isn't about queerness, but it certainly made me feel a lot when palmer punched a homophobe and when sam got his diploma at the end because protecting queer kids and looking out for their happiness is so important and it meant a lot to see it here <3

I didn't expect to enjoy this movie. As most people who have watched this, I came across the film scrolling through Instagram reels and came across a scene that inspired me to watch the entirety of the film. This movie felt like a hug. I'm not doing amazing mentally at this point, but watching this movie felt like a warm embrace. The story is pretty predictable; it's nothing ground-breaking for movies challenging traditional gender norms, but the comfort of this film worked in its favour. Ir'a is set in a predominantly right-wing town and follows a younger man trying to get his life back on track after serving 12 years in prison. The residents of the town are all reluctant to believe he can change, reinforcing a functionalist's traditional belief as 'Once a criminal, always a criminal'. Just as a young boy who finds himself enjoying things that a typical boy of his age typically does would not be based on traditional gender roles. Let me reiterate, this film does not break the mould on any typical drama story surrounding a moving relationship. It's the fact that it does everything you expect so perfectly that it feels like a tight hug from a friend after a long day.
