It’s crazy how much a great performance can elevate a pretty average film. Jessie Buckley really is so good.
Anything that includes some sort of mystery thriller usually entices me and this definitely did that. It’s very tedious and constantly leaves you second guessing the characters as each one is unravelled more but it does lack in certain areas that halts this from being anything apart from mediocre.
The first hour or so of this film feels really quite lacklustre and spends far too much time focusing on the whole ‘I can fix him’ trope rather than needed development for certain characters. Things do eventually pick up nearer the end and it becomes something that’s really quite compelling, but I do think that is mainly due to the absence of Johnny Flynn unfortunately.
This is definitely the Jessie Buckley show and she carries a cast that’s littered with okay-poor performances. She’s fantastic as this troubled and isolated young woman who’s fascinated by her own rebellious and lustful lifestyle and it was brilliant seeing her fall down this ravenous path. I think Trystan Gravelle also gave a good supporting performance while most of the other family were pretty average, but still fine. Like I said though I wasn’t keen on Johnny Flynns performance, there’s next to no ambience to his performance and every line seemed to be delivered with next to no intent whatsoever.
