Hayao Miyazaki absolutely RIPPING into AI is peak cinema. I got secondhand embarrassment to the people presenting the AI “art” concept to him. It’s the balance of utilizing technology to our advantage to allow us to progress, but not letting it take away our humanness. He runs his animation studio like the navy, but that’s how they create masterpieces that they do. His hesitation around CGI is understandable. After animating things by hand for so long, I understand his skepticism. I could watch him sit and do nothing but sip coffee and I’d be inspired. I wish this was 3 hours long. 

He’s got a wicked sense of humor and cracked many morbid and silly jokes. He is also philosophical amongst all the “I am an old man who is gonna die someday” statements (why would you do this to me😮‍💨). It was bittersweet hearing how Hayao’s friends were passing away around him. Lots of good quotes to take away from this. Miyazaki knows exactly what he wants and wants it done the correct way.

miyazaki is such an inspiration. watching him work and listening to the thoughts running through his head seriously make me wish i was working on something great. i’m so glad that i’m young and have time to pursue something magical like this.

i used to love drawing, but i ended up giving up on that hobby because of how frustrated id get when things wouldn’t turn out the way i wanted them to. looking back, i sketched some stuff at 12 years old i couldn’t even think of making now, and i seriously do wish it was something i’d kept pursuing. miyazaki inspires me to observe the world; to find a small beauty and emphasize it. i hope that i’ll be able to find an avenue to express myself artistically soon. this is such a bittersweet feeling and i am both discouraged and inspired.
