this movie has no right to be as fun and light hearted as it is. this is such a wildly entertaining film that follows a simple premise but seems to get so much out of it. the simple task of a bunch of professional thieves to steal a diamond and they just seem to go to the most wild places to achieve it.
what i love most about this is they actually pull off 3 heists that are flawless for the most part except once in the first and it throws everything into disarray. then it comes full circle with no helicopters or starting a prison break with cars and trucks they just walk into the bank and get the safe deposit guy to open it up for them.
this film though is made by it’s characters and the way they interact with one another. each of them brings their own unique charm and personality to the heist and it seems to match the role they play. the way that they go at each other after each mistake feels so natural and you can sense the frustration and confusion they’re feeling.
the doctor is such an unlucky man. he funds their over the top operations with no results coming from all of them and then finally amicably goes in a different direction. they of course then pull it off leaving him down a bunch of money and stoneless. rip robert redford you really knew how to play the lead.

I came to this to eulogize Robert Redford but now let's also re-eulogize Quincy Jones and George Segal while we're at it.
