the music in this film is genuinely perfect. and so is the cinematography. the final act is just insane. from the start, you can tell something bad is about to happen. and then, it does.

Claire Denis is such an interesting figure. a white french woman who grew up in Africa. she explores colonialism and femininity (and also masculinity, see: Beau Travail) through such a unique lens. i need to watch more of her films.

One of my great movie sins of omission: I’ve been slow to board the Denis hype train. (We won’t speak of my Ozu transgressions.) But this one might be the skeleton key I was waiting for.

Huppert is a forever cheat code. And there’s something about slow-chugging, often-violent inevitability (Haneke springs to mind) that always gets its hooks in me.

And if i’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: every movie gets a little better when someone shaves their head.
