the music in this film is genuinely perfect. and so is the cinematography. the final act is just insane. from the start, you can tell something bad is about to happen. and then, it does.
Claire Denis is such an interesting figure. a white french woman who grew up in Africa. she explores colonialism and femininity (and also masculinity, see: Beau Travail) through such a unique lens. i need to watch more of her films.
white people be like, "would i rather go back to my home country or risk my life in hopes of making a profit? hmmm... idk... that's a tough one... if i'm not here who's going to produce the cash crops and exploit the locals for cheap labor? no... it has to be me 😞✊"
