as beautiful as this film is, there's no hiding the weird fetish content underneath. I absolutely adore surrealist cinema but having a thirteen-year-old do nude scenes, especially with her older male counterparts, is just pedophilic and creepy. this story would’ve flourished under female direction, and I’m disappointed to see such an interesting and emotional topic be degraded under the male gaze.
that said, the imagery and aesthetic of this film are immaculate and resonant. the female experience is one beyond comprehension and the ordinary constraints of logic. nature and terror intertwine gracefully in this exploration of character beyond the small town realization and religious condemnation. I would love to see a remake of this movie directed by a woman.
