I think this movie does its job well, it portrays the unfair and cruel justice system being weaponized against innocent black men as it has so many times. The real pictures are powerful and a reminder that this still goes on until this day, racism isn’t something of yesterday but something we need to fight today too. I think it tells a good story but to be honest I just found Tish as a weak main character. She has little to no personality outside of loving Alonzo. The supporting cast is just so much more interesting, especially her sister and dad, Colman Domingo does a phenomenal job with the very little screen time he had I wish that he played a bigger role. It was shot well but in the end it just didn’t hit as hard for me personally.

those who said that this was essential viewing were absolutely correct because i truly think everyone should watch this at some point in there life. this movie doesn’t shy away from anything and in fact look at racism, sexual assault, police overreach and systematic oppression. i find this movie works so well because of the juxtaposition from plot a and plot b.

with the use of past and present telling we see that one of major plot points is a blossoming young couple. they’ve known each other for all their lives and finally work out that they have to be together and want to be with each other. to cap this off they end up having a child together. this sounds like almost a rom com but that where the overarching plot steps in.

the system of injustice in america ripped apart this dream. every good moment that we see in this film is later counterfeited by a further telling of those events. a sit down with an old friend turns into a harrowing tale about life inside and how it’s inevitable to get there. an warm embrace in the street and getting ready to head on home turns into a near arrest for assault when they were just the victims.

jenkins does such a great job of removing any subtly from the themes and instead just slapping you in the face with them. making you sit in each awkward and awful moment and having to feel their pain and reflect on its existence. the perfume scene was the centrepiece for all of this with the way that each person smelled the perfume explaining their exact place in society and how they viewed black people especially women. at times a tough watch but one that i believe you a better for having done

I thought this was going to be a feel good movie but it ended up just being really real and for me, the point of art is to harm you and for that it deserves 5 stars. I wouldn’t recommend it though
