I enjoyed this a lot.
Jane Fonda gives an incredible performance as Bree Daniels, a NYC-based call girl who is the subject of private investigation by John Klute, played by Donald Sutherland. Klute is hired by Peter Cable after his friend Tom Grumman is reported missing and police work was ineffective, with letters between Bree and Tom found. Fonda's performance here is just great- Bree has been able to develop a hard shell in life through the traumas she's endured yet she remains paranoid and insecure at times, especially as she is trying to break through into an acting career. Bree initially refuses Klute's help until she acknowledges she is being followed by an abusive patron she met 2 years ago, and the two eventually develop a romantic relationship. As witnesses to the man, including fellow call girl Arlyn Page, start disappearing, it is clear time is of the essence.
I do like the twist of Cable being the abusive man/Tom's murderer, it is obviously someone you don't suspect but him killing Tom to hide his abusive nature and maintain his upper class businessman status seems very fitting for the NYC environment. The film relies on making the viewer anxious for Bree, which it does successfully and especially at the end when all is revealed and it seems like Cable is going to get the upper hand on Bree. Overall, very solid.
