was a brutal watch for many reasons. i was on a long ass flight, this movie is hella long, i couldn’t really hear the audio with Turkish airline headphones, and also the movie was hard to watch in general.

this movie was confusing. im not really sure who its for or what it was about. it sorta mixed in some interesting history about how native americans were treated/how settlers killed them/tried for the money in the early wild west. i think this is a mostly true story, or at least based on reality?

you repeatedly watch leo fuck up and be a piece of shit. like watching him slowly kill his wife by poisoning her was so difficult to sit with. at the same time, i did really believe he loved her? it doesn’t make sense. i still found myself wanting them to live happily ever after even though he killed her whole family basically.

Liked this more on rewatch, but still not convinced that it is a masterpiece. I can 'appreciate' the harrowing, unfortunately true story it tells. And with a short brake I did not mind the long runtime. However my major complaint is that I have a hard time understanding Ernest, the main character.

I see a lot of people praising the performance of DiCaprio, but honestly I do not fully agree. Yes he acts fantastic in some scenes, but overall his performance felt really inconsistent (though maybe that is just the writing). Ernest is portrayed as someone who is not very smart. Leo does a great job in playing this in some scenes. However, in some others he just comes across the same as he does in a lot of his other movies: competent and intelligent.

This makes that I have a hard time interpreting Ernest his character, like I said. Does he not understand what is going on and is his uncle using him? Or does he realize fully well what he is doing and is he consumed by his own greed? I honestly cannot tell which one of these theories is true, because both seem to be supported by different scenes. Moreover, it seems like he truly loves Mollie. So why kill her for the money if he is already living with her (and thus also living from her money)? It does not make sense to me. Was he affraid of his uncle? Does he not understand it? And what does the ending mean: does he not want to admit that he tried to kill Mollie? Or is he speaking the truth, and did he really not realize at the time that he was killing her? I honestly don't know and I therefore have a hard time interpreting the entire movie

At that time, white men saw the natives as simple money bags. Instead of seeing them as humans, those people saw them as opportunities to get rich. At the moment when it was no longer useful to them, they were murdered (since sometimes that also left them money). Ernest is a somewhat complex character, DiCaprio's incredible performance made this character more complex. He is a man who loves women, money and other types of luxuries and comforts. That reminds me of the passage in Timothy that says
 "For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." Timothy 6:10 
basically what we see is how that love of money led him to do unimaginable things like murder his family. of your beloved wife. Also lying to make themselves look like “redeemed” people that also reminds me of another passage, and it says like this:
 "Driven by greed, they will invent ingenious lies to get hold of your money" Pedro 2:3 
which is basically what everyone who is in that mess does (or some because others do reveal what happened).
