the article mentioned is an interesting read, and compares sex workers/pornographers to factory workers who do soulless, efficient work, just as their manager and consumer requires. "they serve the purpose they are hired for, and one can forget them as quickly as both the industrial mogul and his customer forget the worker."

capitalism has turned sex into a commodity, rather than an intimate or private act. a moment that surprised me from one of the interviews in this documentary is when a man was asked his preferences, and his first answer was 'i like to make love.'

was so excited to watch this but was sorely disappointed. at most it pokes around at the idea of soviet militant aesthetics, i.e. a lieutenant seduces his comrade under a portrait of lenin. there two somewhat compelling pre-shoot audition tapes which lend some unexpected personalization but but besides that it’s a 19 minute edit compilation of a series of performers with making faces of “that sadness only seen in eastern european gay porn” instead of trying to answer why. watch grodecki’s “europe in transition” series for something more substantial but very heavy.

i think examining pornography as a medium that can elucidate us on the wider societal and (sub)cultural contexts surrounding its creation is really quite interesting. porn, in spite of servicing a most primal urge, is ever-changing to fit the needs and desires of the time, from the multifaceted satire of de sade to the hypersaturated, fast-paced porn of today's gooning populace. eastern european porn in which the participants are uncomfortable and clearly dont want to be there has always confounded me somewhat - not in the reasons it exists (ofc people in poor living situations will do sex work for money, and ofc people are going to exploit those in poor living situations), but in the reasons its consumed. this mini-doc doesnt really explore that so im still confused on that really. smth smth whatever that girl who reviews czech hunter on tiktok says. as far as the doc's content itself goes, i can appreciate not showing the actual PORN parts of the porn in this, as to not further the exploitation of these men, though i think generally the idea needs fleshing out to maybe fully illustrate the thesis statement (seeing the fall of communism through gay pornography). i guess i expected moreso a progression of porn, rather than simply a look into the post-soviet malaise presented within it.
