First hour of the movie; I spent it tryna find out where the movie was set to try and gather some context of the story and kind of ensure accuracy in what’s going on (big mistake to think a French man would make a movie about a proper story showing a woman’s life in war in a middle eastern country) 🤔 cuz it was shot in Jordan but they’re mostly speaking Palestinian and there were times i thought that’s where it could be set and the story might have something to do with the location but also there’s a civil war involving religion so then it’s based on Lebanese history so maybe that’s what the rest of the family’s story’s context will follow…

During the following 30 minutes; I gathered that the French man director does not really care where specifically the movie is supposed to be set in, and the story mainly has to do with the fact that we’re in some non-specific levant country and there’s a civil war and based on this fucked up family’s story so I gave up on the specifics of the country which were initially a bit misleading 

And then the final 30 minutes; I became more focused on the twins’ mission to find their father and their brother, trying to analyze who they could be and shit (😂🔫) and I especially started racking my brain after hearing her extremely horrifying and jarring gasp only to soon after be extremely shocked and horrified and disturbed and heartbroken

But in summary it’s a really good movie, Denis ate, with a really good ending and emotional and sensitive scenes and themes (a bit of initial non-plot centric confusion on my behalf, which could’ve been avoided if I wasn’t Arab or bothered enough to get country context, which is most of the time important but I guess not here 🙂)

I’m not crying, I swear it was just the peppers in my ramen but Dude, what the hell did I just watch. I’m not going to lie this story is super fucked up, I will try to avoid spoilers but man what a rollercoaster of a movie. The camerawork, the subtle music and details all wrapped together in an insane twist ending, really really well done. Ok, so the cons, it’s can be a little draggy, definitely in the start and especially with the mothers first lover, that needed to be fleshed out a bit more and some parts could’ve been cut down a bit for it to flow a little smoother also sometimes it do get a bit confusing when the narrative switched from mother to daughter. Those are really the majority of my negatives besides it being in French but that’s a low blow honestly. The story is fabulously told, well thought out and definitely interesting how the narrative felt like both stories were moving together to finally conjoin in the middle with the twisted finale. It was super well done that way. I will admit, I have no idea how I feel about the first brother, like he was born into war so it was etched into him as a child but did he really deserve all that. I also feel like the mom is a bit messed up making the twins do that scooby-doo mystery gang hunt for such a messed up payout. It would be so difficult to live a normal life after that I would think. It almost felt like need to know information that the twins didn’t need to know but then if that didn’t happen we wouldn’t have gotten this amazing story. I’ll definitely watch again.

Rewatching it makes the film feel more and more heavier,not smarter. You’re not looking for clues anymore, you’re watching people move toward something you know they can’t escape. It’s brutal in a very quiet way. Rewatching this is justtt really hurts hahahah.
Incendies is a really well-made film especially considering how complicated the story is. It jumps between different timelines and characters, but the writing keeps everything clear and controlled. It's doesn't feels confusing just for the sake of it, and every detail ends up mattering,it's literally just well written.
Denis Villeneuve’s direction is a big reason the film works so well. He keeps everything grounded and serious, letting scenes breathe instead of forcing emotions. The pacing is slow but effective, and the film always feels intentional. This is how you make a complicated movie it's complicated but it's not hard to follow or to understand!!
