This film holds an essence like no other, Żuławski is one of the best to do it and I don’t think anybody has a debut film as crafty as this. He’s breaking down the intensity of trauma in the midst of oppression and revealing the apocalyptic nature of a distressful living situation. Religious and infectious symbolism supported by amazing visuals and editing, I love that all his work afterward is prevalent in this he’s been gifted since the beginning and carried what he knew over to make his other masterpieces, speaking of which i see so many parallels to Possession which unironically i think this is a slightly superior film structurally and it hits points that would’ve probably made Possession even better than what it is. I think Żuławski had no limits if it weren’t for his oppressive country and this hits way more for me knowing he had to live through this oppression. I could easily see this being a 5 star film on a rewatch where i can sit and analyze the key details, such a haunting atmosphere riddled with a devastating situation.
